-The White House is sending a strong warning to prepare for a cyberattack by the Russians, giving a new urgency for local cyber security teams.
“Unfortunately, it’s like a perfect storm of opportunity for the bad guys,” said In-Trust IT cyber security expert Dave Hatter.
Hatter said Russians have a history of launching devastating cyberattacks, including some that have become their calling card.
“This is sort of like a ransomware attack except there’s no ransom. It goes in, encrypts your data and pretty much destroys everything it runs across. it’s called a wiper. They’re known for these types of attacks,” Hatter said.
Duke Energy is also on alert.
‘’There’s no denying that being one of the largest energy providers in the county, we’re probably an attractive asset for criminals to look at,” said Duke Energy spokeswoman Sally Thelen.
Duke has already seen an increase in phishing and cyber security breach attempts up 81 percent between January and February this year.
